WELCOME TO

THE DR KENNETH KAUNDA
DISTRICT TOURISM

WEBSITE

The Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality (DC40) in the North West Province is located 65km south west of Johannesburg and borders the Gauteng Province on its south west. It covers an area of about 16 483km 2and is home to almost 1 million people.

The municipality consists of four local municipalities; the cities of Tlokwe (Potchefstroom) and Matlosana, and the towns of Maquassi Hills and Ventersdorp.

The Dr Kenneth Kaunda District is a region with a rich diverse natural and cultural heritage and potential for sustained economic growth. The region is home to some of the most prominent gold mines in the world, and has one of the oldest meteor impact sites in the world (and the largest in South Africa), the site of the establishment of the first capital city in the northern areas of South Africa, and some of the best retail, education, sport and medical facilities on the African continent. The district is serviced by a number of primary roads, i.e. the N12 from Johannesburg to Cape Town, as well as the main road from Gauteng to Mafikeng via Ventersdorp (N14).

The N12 Treasure Corridor forms the main development axis in the district, and serves as a potential concentration point for future industrial, commercial and tourism development. Other significant provincial distributor roads include the main road between Matlosana and Ventersdorp, the main road between Potchefstroom (Tlokwe) and Ventersdorp, the P61/1 between the N14, Carletonville and Fochville and the R501 between Potchefstroom (Tlokwe) and Carletonville
