Local Economic Development

The Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality (DKKDM) drives Local Economic Development (LED) through strategic partnerships, agricultural promotion, and the utilization of the N12 Treasure Corridor. Located in the North West province, its primary economic development goal is to stimulate growth, create jobs, and diversify the district economy.

Core Economic Pillars
The municipality’s LED strategy targets several key drivers for regional prosperity:
• Agriculture: As a cornerstone of local trade, the district features over 10,000 agricultural households. The municipality actively supports the transformation of agribusiness to regional and global markets to reduce poverty and secure food supply.
• Mining & Industry: Home to some of the world's most prominent gold mines (particularly in the City of Matlosana), the district leverages its mineral wealth. However, LED initiatives focus heavily on diversifying the economy to reduce reliance on declining mining sectors.
• Tourism & Heritage: The region capitalizes on its rich cultural heritage—such as the Vredefort Dome (one of the oldest meteor impact sites globally). Flagship events like the N12 Marathon are heavily supported as mechanisms to boost local trade, hospitality, and tourism.

Strategic Infrastructure & Support
• The N12 Treasure Corridor: This major route serves as the central development axis for the district, acting as a geographic concentration point for new industrial, commercial, and tourism investments.
• Local Municipal Integration: The DKKDM collaborates with its three constituent local municipalities City of Matlosana, JB Marks, and Maquassi Hills to pool resources and champion high-impact business development projects.
• Business Support & SMME Development: The municipality offers support mechanisms for historically disadvantaged individuals (HDIs), assisting small enterprises through business profile development, compliance support, and funding opportunities for localized projects.
